Merry Xmas 2011

I made these mini vanilla cupcakes then skewered them onto a polystyrene conical shape. I decorated with fondant stars, kiwifruit, jaffas and green cachous. End result - a lot of fun, yummy - and no fruit cake - so children enjoy!! I made two - 40 cupcakes per cake.

Winnie the Pooh

Winnie the Pooh for five year old Alex. I spent several hours pressing out flowers and making lollipops. I made Winnie two times and am much happier with this one than the previous one. I can say that i am quite content with how this cake turned out.

Drink Anyone?

Dani is going to be 21 tomorrow and asked me to make a martini glass.  I am reasonably happy with the top pic - I think i went a little awry with the flowers around the bottom, that is why i put some on the top. Mmmm - if you have any thoughts - these would be welcome.

Mickey Mouse Madness

I got a call at 5.00pm on Thursday early evening to make a Mickey Mouse cake for 11.00am on Saturday morning. Fortunately I had two cakes in the freezer for two orders coming up. So Mickey has a chocolate face and Vanilla ears. I had to go to work on Friday from 3.00pm till 11.00pm, so it ended up being a bit of a rush - so I guess it turned out okay in spite of the tight time-frame.

Pie anybody??

I was asked to make this a few days ago, technically not too difficult, but i think i should have added a glaze or something similar - i am happy with the end look.  I hope Matthew likes it.

Happy Birthday Cheryl and Carolyn xx

Shame on me for not making unique cakes - but i had to rush these through.  Once again Wilton nozzle 233 to the rescue. Clearly these could have been made a lot more tidier and uniform. But alright for a fun cake.

Wild Meadow and Happy Travels...

I had fun with these two cakes. I swear by my new Wilton nozzle 233 for the grass effect. I had already made pink, lavender and yellow flowers for the meadow, but my dog ate them all. So in a hurried effort on the day of pickup i made only yellow. I still think they look ok.

The suitcase final product looks pretty good - i am very happy with the straps and corners. I put myself under a bit of pressure with this cake as i thought i had a bit longer to finish both cakes. So it could have had a slightly better finish. All the same not too bad.

'Bumblebee'

To be honest - this did not look quite as good finished as i thought it might. Good colours - but the figure needed a bit more attention to detail.

Happy Retirement Dave

This is a 29cm fruit cake - very heavy.  There is almond icing on the top, then topped off with the white, red and black. I could have joined the seams a bit better I think. I am quite happy with the effect of the silver colouring.

Dynamic Dinosaur

I dropped this cake off to Callum for Ellas' 4th birthday party today.  It is a chocolate cake with a fondant volcano and buttercream icing for the rest.  I found the stegasaurus skeleton at the $2 shop - which was a great finishing touch.  This is not a tricky cake at all - it was fun putting it together - thank you Monte once again for your male perspective... very helpful.

A piece of Patchwork

This cake was finished today. It took quite a while to decorate as I had to keep emptying my icing bag and swaping nozzles.  I am really happy with the end product - however - I really must practice writing with a piping bag.  The lettering is from using cutters and although relatively neat- not as nice in my opinion as 'writing'.

Ready to go now...

I had to improvise for the antenae - small lollies on a stick - just had to do.  Plus my Stamp'n Up cutter and paper for the flowers.

Pretty Butterfly

Just finished this one.  Must quickly find a pipecleaner for the antenna.  I have photographed the steps this time.  I bought myself a 30cm cake tin off TM and it is fabulous!! I have enough room for the entire template and don't have to muck around with skewers and toothpicks.  If anyone knows where I can source some heart shaped lollipops - please tell me.

Here comes Barney

I have just finished Barney for a friends nephew. This is the first time I have made icing - Dairy Free - and the icing has stayed relatively soft, whereas butter icing will firm up. So I am a bit dissapointed with the light green background- it kept lifting when I tried to smooth it out. Quite happy with Barney though.

Minnies' Afternoon Tea

My friend Carolyn's daughter Wendy is due to have her second child - a little girl - I was invited to afternoon tea and took this cake.  A White Chocolate Raspberry layered cake. It tastes as good as it looks, I was really pleased with it and the other ladies seemed to like it too. The recipe is from the latest AWW More Kids Cakes book. And the boottee are made from a template out of the Cake Decorators Motif Bible - very helpful little book - I recommend it to any one wanting to start making these types of decorations - this is my first attempt.

My first - 'New' customer

Here he is - My very first R2D2 - isn't he fantastic. The seven year old lad (Whose birthday it is) thought so.  I am really pleased with how this came out. My special thanks to Monte for his first hand help.

Some of my earliest efforts.....

1. The castle for my son was the first time I used lemonade jelly for water - the boys loved it.
2. My daughter was 4 and this was the first time I made fluffy frosting - it looks a little messy - but it was nice to eat - yum. Who can resist pebbles?
3. My son turned 3 and I was pushed for time - this is just a premade cake - cut up with stuff plonked on it - thankfully 3 year olds are not too discerning.
4. A treasure map for my son - a variation on a picture - fun to make.
5. My grandson was 2 - he wanted a train cake - this one from the AWW - very popular - and lots of fun to make.
6. My daughter went horse-riding with friends for her 9th birthday - hence the horse head.
7. Ahh yes - the carousel horse - My daughter was 5 -this was the first time I had piped with butter icing. I have learnt to  slow down and make sure to cover all the gaps. Lovely colour - and loads of butter icing.

Monte and Dad have birthdays in the same week

Montes cake is a Devils Choc Food Cake, two cakes divided into two filled and covered with Ganache.  Dad loves Coffee Cake and the walnuts are fresh off the tree - yum.

Big Kids too...

I just wanted to add that my big kid friends cake photos are here to add to the blog. I am wanting to get started in making cakes and thought this was a good place to view some cakes I have already made.

Tuesday 19 April 2011

Rhonda is 50 and Ian is 66

Rhondas' cake is a heavy fruit cake, while Ians' is a triple layered White and Dark Chocolate Mud cake with my first attempt at Ganache. Talk about chocolate indulgence, 750gms of perfect Cadburys Dairy Milk Choc with fresh cream. Yum. Ians' cake was decorated with White choc fudge writing and brown m&m's.

Novelties for Niece and Nephew

Salem asked for a pirate cake while Niece Freya requested a 'Carrot Cake' made from , yes, carrot cake.

Jordan turns 21

I had a ball making this cake - I whittled the drum sticks from skewers.

Amy turns 3

This looks a little nude - it was finished off with white lace and pink ribbon threaded through it.
